We explore how the death of a parent can shape our business and personal lives on this episode of The Startup Chat with Steli and Hiten.  Hiten’s mother died when he was 8 and Steli’s father passed away when Steli was 6.  Those traumatic occurrences of the death of loved ones had, and continues to have impact, on our lives.

Hiten says he thinks it led to him still thinking in terms of worst case scenarios.  He feels that if you are expecting the worst and the worst happens, you’re ready for it and then you can legitimately say, what’s the worst that can happen.  Steli says overcoming a big traumatic event adds strength and depth to your character.

Both Steli and Hiten are trying to share their emotions with loved ones, not for solutions, but for the experience of sharing their emotions.  They believe that founders tend to not share their problems and emotions.  Hiten says instead of focusing on somebody helping you, focus on getting your feelings out there.  Steli adds that it’s really important to be in touch with your emotional household.

Steli and Hiten: Talk to someone with feeling in mind, instead of feedback in mind.  When something is on your mind, experiment with talking to somebody and zoom in on the emotional side of your feelings.
